The flurry mobile client was not fetching emails for me for the past 2 to 3 days. It has been a real nuisance and headache. Seems like it’s not only me having the issue, but few others have complained in the forums. However, the WAP site was working fine though. The good news is that the issue seems to be resolved and I am getting my emails again. Hoorrayyyy! Thanx flurry, once again.

Flurry’s New WAP Site

Flurry has recently updated its WAP site to improve the interface. It’s now easier (and makes more sense, IMO) to navigate through the WAP site. The idea of seperating the three main services (email, mobs, feeds) is truely intriguing and easier for new users to get used to.

The settings page has a whole new design with better categorization. Specially, I like the setting to turn on/off IMAP synchronization. I personally keep it turned off as I always keep my flurry client clean and tidy, while I do not want to delete the messages from my Gmail.

The “turn images off (for older phones)” is not only useful for older phones, but for newer phones as well in case you do not want to download the images to reduce network usage.

Adding/removing email accounts have always been an ease with Flurry’s WAP site. This time, Flurry team has extended it to a further step by adding the ability to add, remove or edit my contact list. This feature has been available through the mobile client from long ago. I was just starting to wonder why it shouldn’t be available on the WAP site as well, when they added it there.

Managing notifications and SMS alerts has always been easy. With the new design of the settings page, it has become too much of an ease. It’s more convenient to see all notification settings for different mobs in a single place.

Ability to mark emails/feeds as read and sorting multiple email accounts, in the WAP site are probably the best things they have added as it makes more sense now, to use the WAP site as an alternative to the mobile client. Moreover, I just heard from somewhere (probably the forums) that the new WAP site is touch screen friendly. However, I haven’t got a chance to test it on a touch screen. Well, I don’t own one, unless one of you are kind enough to donate me one .

Flurry team has moved up an extra step and won our hearts once again, while some users wait for a touch screen friendly version of the mobile client. Let’s hope that they will make it soon.

Flurry Mail Plus

After a long time without blogging about flurry here, I am back with this blog. Flurry has recently released a new version of the mobile client and this time it is called Flurry Mail Plus. Flurry Mail Plus has a whole new user interface with a lot of our wishes fulfilled. One of the long awaited and remarkable change in this new version is viewing of seperate email accounts. Now I can view my emails sorted by email accounts rather than viewing a huge list of unsorted emails from all my email accounts. Yet another great feature is the filter feature in contacts. Now you can filter your contact list by entering letters/words on your keypad, just like you have been doing it with email/feeds. Say, you press “A” on you keypad, it would filter-out those contacts with the letter “A”. Previously this was available only on email and feeds.

However, the bad news is that quite a few Flurry users are experiencing problems with the new version and most of them are switching to the old version. Unfortunately, I am also one of them. So you guessed right. I am not yet able to see the cute little Flurry Mail Plus in action. My phone shuts down with an attempt to run the client. It seems like a memory issue as many Flurry users have reported in the Flurry Forums. Anyways, my phone is a so much rare type (Panasonic MX6 – have you heard about it?) Yet, the good news is that Flurry team is going to fix it and hopefully release a new version of Flurry Mail Plus which would solve the issues. Well, they have always been better at it.

So, for the time being let us all go with the old version if the new version doesn’t work in our mobiles. It would also be great to help Flurry team identify issues in the new version by reporting any phones on which the new client doesn’t run. Let’s keep our hope that Flurry team would solve our issues soon. Way to go folks.

Mobs

flurry has launched alpha of its new service called mobs. Mobs are the sweet new way to easily communicate with your groups of friends anywhere for free! Create a mob for your family, friends, teammates, etc and invite them today! The new service lets you create any number of mobs and virtually gather with your friends. It is basically like a group and everyone in the group can interact with each other through the mob email address. The service is currently available only through the phone interface (wap site).

There are also some other side-features which enhance your mobs experience. These include sms notifications for mob messages. In addition, the new wap interface (with some colours and so on) enhances your experience with flurry. If you are lost or want more information about a service, now you are granted with the ever-needed help pages.

The reason why we all love flurry, “flurry is free”, still remains the same. Well, I am afraid this is too much of an essay. Go now and login to flurry at http://www.flurry.com from your phone and check out the features.

New Features on flurry’s Mobile Portal

flurry has upgraded the mobile website. When you login to http://www.flurry.com on your mobile phone you will notice mail, feeds and settings tabs at the bottom. With these new tabs you can do a lot more things which you needed to go to your computer to do before. Some of the new features include:

Mail:
* View email received from all your email accounts.
* Reply / Forward / Compose new messages.
* Check for new mail by using the On-Demand-Check feature.

Feeds:
* Read the RSS feeds you have subscribed to.
* Refresh and check if any new items have arrived.

Settings:
* View / Add / Delete your flurry contact list.

I have some other features in my mind which are not yet implemented. Hopefully, flurry would implement them soon.
* Ability to delete emails / feed items from flurry inbox.
* Ability to edit flurry contacts.

New Mail Notifications

SMS notifications is one area where many issues come up in flurry. As sending international SMS costs huge, flurry has been using email-to-SMS service. This means that if your mobile service provider doesn’t support email-to-SMS, flurry wont provide SMS notifications for you. Thus, SMS notifications is currently available to only limited countries outside US and Canada, and many flurry users are not able to use this remarkable feature.
Last Thurday a user called CaDmiuM48 posted in flurry forums about a new way to provide this service. The basic idea was to use a missed call instead of the SMS. This same method is used by a CellityFREE SMS too. Click here to view the forum topic (Click here to view the forum topic.)
I have been heavily using CellityFREE SMS. But why didn’t I come up with this idea? It might be because I haven’t experienced flurry’s SMS notifications feature as it is not available here in Maldives.

Hide Your Email Address From Spam Bots

The battle of fighting spam is getting tougher. Spammers are finding smart ways to spam, while anti-spam geeks are scratching their heads to keep in pace. It has been a never ending war and will be in the future too.
One of the top measures anti-spammers take to fight against spam is hiding of email addresses published in web pages, thus preventing spam bots from extracting them. Some techniques used for this purpose prove to be sucessful while the others are cracked repeatedly.
As an individual, everyone on the internet need to take their own measures to prevent their email addresses from being stolen by spam bots. Here is a technique you could use. The reason I found this interesting was because not only spam bots, but also humans will find it difficult to read your email address once you apply the technique. Basically what it does is encoding the email address in ASCII format. Click here if you are interested.

The blog has a short review of 10 mobile email clients. The remarkable point is that, flurry is the first on the list. The review reads, “Flurry: Flurry is one of the beskt known and popular mobile email applications. Supports java enabled devices and claims that it has users in 200+ countries. Offers a free solution.”
